YMCA Announces Another Togetherhood Project
By SUMMER ZIMMER
Director of Communications and Social Responsibility, Kosciusko County YMCA
The Kosciusko Community YMCA announces another “Togetherhood” project for its members to get involved in to serve the local community on Saturday, May 2. “Togetherhood” is the Y’s signature program for social responsibility and invites Y members to lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit the community where they live.
This project will partner with the Red Chimney Community Garden in Winona Lake. The garden grows squash and corn to share with the community and encourages members of the garden to donate 10 percent of their produce back to the community. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, Y Members will be helping to prepare the garden for spring by raking up the dead leaves, spreading mulch, prepping the squash and corn areas, and if there is someone skilled in masonry, they’ll repair some of the brick work on the garden’s patio.
Register to participate in the project at the YMCA’s Welcome Center. There is a limit of 20 people. Those ages 10 to 15 can participate with parental supervision. The work team will share a picnic lunch to celebrate the completion of their work.
Togetherhood was created to strengthen communities by allowing Y members to lead and run convenient, fun and rewarding service projects as part of the Y member experience. By bringing people together in service to their neighborhoods, Togetherhood is designed to build both individual and community well-being. Y members work as a committee in partnership with their Y to select, plan and run projects outside the Y that benefit the people and organizations in their community. Many of the projects will include a partnership with another community non-profit.
This year’s committee is made up of Brogan Gargis, Marilyn Kincaide, Dixie Kraus, Krista Nicholson, Dan Pacheco, David Phelps, Susan Potter and Betsy Ray.
