South Bend Symphony Putting On Beethoven’s Ninth
The South Bend Symphony Orchestra announces the third performance of its 2014-15 Masterworks Series at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at the Morris Performing Arts Center.
Maestro Tsung Yeh conducts Beethoven’s colossal Ninth Symphony, widely regarded as one of the greatest works of Western classical music. Known as the “Choral Symphony” for its revolutionary use of a chorus in the final movement, Beethoven’s last symphony is famous for its setting of Friedrich Schiller’s poem “An die Freude” [Ode to Joy]. The fact that Beethoven was wholly deaf at the time of its composition and premiere only adds to the miraculous and triumphant nature of the Ninth.
The performance is a collaboration with the University of Notre Dame, and will feature the Notre Dame Chorale, Notre Dame Glee Club, and the Saint Mary’s College Women’s Choir, directed by Alexander Blachly, Daniel Stowe, and Nancy Menk, respectively. Vocal soloists include Deborah Mayer, soprano; Callista Hoffman, mezzo soprano; Jay Morrissey, tenor; and Stephen Lancaster; baritone.
Two other classic masterworks balance this titanic program: Brahms’s masterful Variations on a theme attributed to Haydn, as well as J.S. Bach’s beautiful Suite No. 2 in B minor, featuring SBSO Principal Flutist Leslie Short. This evening of significant and blissfully delightful music is not to be missed.
The concert is generously sponsored by the University of Notre Dame. Guest artist underwriting is provided by Henry and Lindsey Schacht.
