Big Innings Spurs Lancer Upset Of Spring Arbor
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – An eight-run inning helped Grace’s baseball team to a split with Spring Arbor on the road on Saturday.
The Lancers snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Cougars (13-24, 6-16 Crossroads League). The win also snapped Grace’s current seven-game losing streak in the season.
Grace dropped the opening game 11-2, falling against Spring Arbor’s efficient offense. The Cougars left just four runners stranded in the game and scored 11 runs on nine hits.
Spring Arbor led 4-2 after five innings of play. Jared Lemler drove in Frank Rocchio in the third, and Colton Ferrand executed a successful squeeze bunt in the fifth to plate Noah Follett.
But the Cougars ran away with the contest with a seven-run explosion in the sixth inning. Spring Arbor scored all seven of its runs with two outs in the inning. Six of the runs were unearned due to a fielding error by the infield.
Rocchio hit 2-for-4, and Matt Morgart was 1-for-2. The Cougars had four extra-base hits in the game compared to none for the Lancers.
Spring Arbor started the second game as the better team, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Grace got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Morgart’s sac fly drove in Follett.
The Cougars pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead 7-1, but Grace was about to unleash its game-changing inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Lancers ripped off seven consecutive hits to kick off their rally. Lemler, CJ Swartz, Austin Green, Logan Grigsby and Brook Vosler each had RBIs in the inning as Grace rallied to tie the game. Paul Blankley then produced what turned out to be the game-winning swing with two outs, doubling to score the two go-ahead runs.
Spring Arbor was unable to produce a rally in response. The Cougars had runners on second and third in the seventh inning with nobody out, but Swartz shut down Spring Arbor from the mound. Swartz struck out the next two batters and the final batter flew out to right field to secure Grace’s win.
Swartz tossed the final three innings of relief for Grace to earn the pitching win. He allowed just two hits and struck out two batters. Swartz also batted 2-for-3.
Blankley hit 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Vosler and Follett each scored twice, and Green drove in two runs.
