A new smartphone app will allow users to stay on top of crime in in their neighborhood.

Inspired by the 1980s cartoon McGruff the Crime Dog, the McGruff Mobile app shows where crimes have occurred and where registered sex offenders live. It is available for free through a partnership with the National Crime Prevention Council and AlertID.

Users who download the app can receive alerts from law enforcement, prevention tips and weather alerts. It can also be used to report crimes.
