Mangas, Spangle Awarded Krause Scholarships
SOUTH BEND – WCHS senior Jake Mangas continues to reap the rewards for his efforts as the consummate student-athlete.
Mangas, who is ranked No. 1 in the WCHS Class of 2015, was one of four area athletes to be awarded scholarships at the recent 42nd annual Moose Krause Memorial Scholar-Athlete Dinner and Awards held at St. Hedwig’s.
Mangas, the starting quarterback last fall and a starting forward on the basketball team this winter, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
David Warbling of New Prairie garnered the top award with a $2,000 scholarship. Brock Spangle of Wawasee and Austin Traxler of South Bend Washington each were presented with $500 scholarships.
Mangas has a 13.43 grade-point average to rank first in his class of 508 students. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the WCHS Math Academic Team. Manga was an IFCA Academic All-State selection and recently was one of 13 student-athletes statewide to receive a Cato Memorial Scholarship from the IHSAA.
Mangas, the son of Tim and Ann Mangas, plans to attend Indiana University to study finance.
Spangle carries a 12.2 GPA to rank first in his senior class of 212 students at Wawasee. A four-year member of the football team and a three-year baseball player, he plans to attend Taylor University to study biology and pre-medicine.
Ben Karasiak, the Athletic Director at Penn High School, received a Contributions to Football Award during the dinner.
Brian VanGorder, the Notre Dame defensive coordinator, was the keynote speaker for the event.
