Sweep Still Leaves Room To Improve
SYRACUSE – It wasn’t ideal, but it didn’t have to be. Less than favorable weather and less than favorable bounces still afforded Wawasee an easy double win over Fairfield and West Noble Monday evening. The Warriors posted a 157 on its home South Shore Golf Course to the neighboring Falcons (171) and Chargers (192).
Jeffrey Moore paced Wawasee with an even round of 36, parring six and seven along the way. Moore needed just two shots to take care of the seventh which helped make up for a pair of bogeys on five and eight. Cal Heinisch was just two over at 38, taking a birdie on four and managing through three bogeys in the middle of his round from the No. 5 position in Wawasee’s rotation.
Tristen Atwood navigated through some up and down play to complete his 41 and Mason Germonprez was one shot back at 42. Maclain Herr didn’t have his best day, but still was a respectable fifth score at 45.
“We are just going straight by averages right now, everyone is so close,” stated Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “Two through five is so close, and really the only gap is at one with Jeffrey. He has a little cushion between him and the others. Really, any night we could have anyone lead us. Tonight was another case of that.”
Landyn Nunemaker led the Falcons with a 38, using a birdie on four to fuel his round from the five spot in the rotation. Andrew Hoover shot a 42, Trenton Robinson a 45, Dustin Layne a 46 and Michael Shetler had a couple blow ups but managed to still shoot 47 from the No. 1 spot.
West Noble had Grant Moser keep the No. 5 success going with a round of 43, tops for the Chargers. Jacob Musselman turned in a 45 and its other three golfers ended with 52 in Aaron Miller, Kolton Peterson and Brock Bonde.
Wawasee moves to 3-0 on the dual season with the two wins. A tough back half of the Northrop Invite left Wawasee two strokes off the title two weeks ago. Otherwise, combined with Wawasee’s abbreviated title at Whitko Saturday, the Warriors have a fairly clean slate. Coach Coverstone is happy with the progress given the scenarios.
“I don’t know what it is this year, it seems like we are more behind than normal,” Coverstone said referring to the dreary start on the schedule. “That will change in a hurry, we have a lot of matches in the next couple weeks. It’s just hard to analyze much with the weather. It’s hard to play, cold and windy. Today was nothing like Saturday, but it’s still wasn’t exactly a nice night.
“It’s hard for me to tell, but as long as we stay around the 160 mark we will be OK.”
Wawasee will return to action Thursday at South Shore in a quad against Whitko, Manchester and South Bend Riley. Fairfield will head back out tomorrow to Heron Creek to face Westview and Angola while West Noble will golf again Thursday at Zollner against Hamilton and Angola.
