Resident Treated For Smoke Inhalation
Syracuse Police Chief Tony Ciriello states the fire was reported at 6:26 a.m. today when Kosciusko County Central Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a house fire at 1034 N. Huntington St., Syracuse. The caller stated there was a fire in the kitchen and Syracuse Fire Department was dispatched to the scene.
Shortly after the call came out Syracuse Police Patrolman Joe Leach arrived on the scene and discovered smoke coming from the residence. Knowing an elderly female, Timmons, lived in the house he entered the home only to discover that he could not get through the residence due to the fire and smoke.
Syracuse Fire Lt. Lee Gardner then arrived at the scene and he and Patrolman Leach found the resident in a bedroom near at the north end of the house. Between the two of them they were able to remove the window screen, get the window open and pull the resident out of the house to safety.
Leach and Gardner were also able to rescue a dog from the home that appeared not to be injured.
The fire was quickly extinguished by Syracuse firemen, which was contained to the kitchen of the home. The remainder of the home received smoke damage from the fire. The cause is still being investigated and appears to be accidental in nature.
