Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial In Indiana This Weekend
The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that travels the country, will be on display through May 4 at Fort Benjamin Harrison on 56th Street, Lawrence, IN. A special opening ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. tonight.
The traveling tribute allows people who may not be able to see the original monument in Washington, D.C., to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the war. It is also an opportunity for veterans to reflect on their service.
Michael Hamm, president of Vietnam Veterans of America, said that veterans who visit often tell stories of their experiences and meet others who share in their memories.
“The stories that you hear, the friendships that are recreated,” said Hamm. “It just takes us back. As far as I’m concerned, that’s probably the best thing about the entire event.”
The Moving Wall is open 24 hours a day throughout the exhibit. Fort Harrison is its first stop this year. The wall has traveled from late April through November each year for more than 30 years.
