Art In Action: Spring Art Show
By DARLA MCCAMMON
Lakeland Art Association
Last Saturday, award winning artists from all over the area brought new work into Lakeland Art Association gallery, in an attempt to win even more awards. The spring art show at Lakeland is well known for having large prize money and offering many awards to the best of the best.
This is a juried show, which means the judge does double duty. The judge must eliminate a percentage of the work submitted, meaning it is quite an accomplishment to receive notification that your work was juried in. Next, the judge most go through the painstaking effort of deciding which work is most outstanding.
This year, with so many entries, it will be an even more onerous task for the judge to decide where to place ribbons.
The show is now open for viewing and you are welcome to come and guess which of those works that are hanging on the wall will be winners. You can view the works from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at the gallery at 107 N. First St., Pierceton. The gallery is nestled among a scattering of shops and restaurants in the historic little town, only 15 minutes from downtown Warsaw.
A nice reception will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at the gallery where you will be able to meet the artists, converse with them about their work, and enjoy some of the best art effort in the country. The reception is free for all. An RSVP is appreciated but not required. Call (574) 594-9950.
While in the gallery, if you are an artist or if you just appreciate art and like to stay up on current events in art, the association is offering a free one year membership during the month of May to anyone who has never been a member before. Just ask the host or hostess for an application. You will receive a monthly newsletter and loads of information about art happenings in our community. You will also make some magnificent friendships with like minded people and will be invited to events, even a picnic this summer.
Another large competition is now over at the Honeywell Clark Gallery, located in Wabash, and the work is available for viewing through Tuesday, May 19. This year’s theme was “trees” and all work had to represent the theme to qualify for entry. A free reception will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 19. RSVP your attendance at the reception.
Last week’s column had a typo in Lila’s 90th Birthday. It will be celebrated in June. You can still honor her with your card and a little donation to support her favorite charity, The Lakeland Art Association. www.lakelandartassociation.org
