Boilers Land A Big One In Swanigan
FORT WAYNE – The Purdue men’s basketball program got some very good news today.
Caleb Swanigan, this year’s Mr. Basketball, announced that he will play for the Boilermakers next season.
Swanigan, a 6-9 power forward from Fort Wayne, had originally committed to Michigan State in April.
Swanigan led Homestead High School to the Class 4-A state championship this past season. He averaged 22.6 points and 13.7 rebounds per game for the Spartans. Swanigan had 20 points and 14 rebounds in a 91-90 overtime win over Evansville Reitz in the Class 4-A title game.
Swanigan earned McDonald’s All-American honors and set career scoring and rebounding records at Homestead with 1,649 points and 1,048 rebounds. He played just three years for the Spartans after reclassifying to graduate a year early in 2015, skipping his junior season.
Swanigan will join a Purdue front court which returns 7-0 senior A.J. Hammon and 7-2 sophomore Isaac Haas next season. The Boilers have also signed guards Ryan Cline from Carmel and Grant Weatherford from Hamilton Heights.
Swanigan was also offered scholarships by a slew of programs, including Duke and Kentucky. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and Purdue coach Matt Painter were both in attendance at Homestead last December when the Spartans defeated Warsaw 60-59. Swanigan also reportedly had strong interest in Cal, which is coached by former Purdue standout Cuonzo Martin.
Swanigan, whose guardian is former Purdue football player Roosevelt Barnes, will be the first Indiana Mr. Basketball to play for Purdue since Glenn Robinson in 1991.
