Weis Still Highest Paid Coach On ND Payroll, Despite Being Fired
New federal tax documents from Notre Dame University show that football coach Brian Kelly’s base pay increased significantly during the 2013 calendar year, but his overall compensation fell.
According to the documents, Kelly earned a base salary of just under $1 million. However his total compensation with bonus pay from the school amounted to $1.2 million, down from $1.5 million in 2012. The Fighting Irish finished 12-1 in 2012, losing to Alabama in the BCS title game. In 2013, Notre Dame finished 9-4 with a victory in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Meanwhile, former coach Charlie Weis continues to receive more money from the school than any other athletics employee. The documents showed that he received approximately $2 million in 2013 as part of an ongoing separation agreement that will extend through December 2015.
Notre Dame fired Weis in November 2009. He received more than $6.6 million in pay and severance and has subsequently been paid an additional $8 million by the university from 2010 through 2013.
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick was shown to receive more than $1.3 million in total compensation for 2013, approximately $200,000 more than in 2012. Women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw received almost $1.3 million from the school. And men’s basketball coach Mike Brey was paid just under $1 million by the school.
