Walorski Creates Bill To Rename Post Office After Fallen Hero
Indiana Congresswoman Jackie Walorski has proposed renaming a U.S. Post Office at 601 S. Main St., Elkhart, after Staff Sergeant Jesse Williams, who died in December 2013 while serving overseas.
Williams, an Elkhart native, was among six soldiers who were killed when a Blackhawk helicopter crashed. He had been deployed three times: once to Iraq from 2007 to 2008 and twice to Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011 and in July 2013.
“It is with great sadness and heavy heart that today we honor and commemorate Staff Sgt. Williams. We will never forget that tragic day in December 2013 when a brave man who answered the call to serve lost his life while defending our country,” said Walorski. “While no action by this body will ever repay Jesse’s sacrifice to our country, renaming this post office will leave a lasting memory of his courage and bravery. On behalf of Hoosiers across Indiana’s Second Congressional District, we are proud to call him one of our own and thank God for giving us this hero.”
Walorski posthumously awarded the Purple Heart to Williams’ mother, Debbie Passerallo, at a ceremony in Elkhart last year. All members of the Indiana House delegation have signed as co-sponsors of the legislation. The bill will not head to the Oversight and Government Reform Committee for further action.
