The Manchester Youth Strings and the Manchester Symphony Orchestra announce today that they are offering String Camp 2015. This inaugural day camp is free for any string student who has been studying the instrument for at least one year.
It is 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 22 to 26 on the North Manchester campus of Manchester University in Wine Recital Hall. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.
Music and stands will be provided. Students must bring their own bows, resin, rock or slip stops, snacks and water bottles. Camp instructors are Dr. Robert Lynn, principal cello with the symphony, and Elizabeth Smith, the MSO concertmaster.
The camp director is Manchester University Professor Scott Humphries, who is the symphony conductor.
“The overall goal of the Manchester Youth Strings is to provide an opportunity for young string players to improve their skills by participating in a large ensemble setting,” Humphries said. Several communities in northeast Indiana are participating, including North Manchester, Wabash, Huntington and Warsaw. However, group members may come from anywhere in the region.
He said the MYS will begin its inaugural season in the fall.
For more information, contact Humphries at (260) 982-5331 or [email protected].
Founded in 1939, the Manchester Symphony Orchestra is a carefully crafted collaboration of professional and community musicians, along with selected MU faculty, staff and MU student musicians.
Humphries also conducts the MU Symphonic Band and is principal conductor of the Fort Wayne Area Community Band. Registrations and health forms, available at http://www.manchester.edu/academics/departments/music/youthstrings/, will be accepted until June 22.
