James H. And Dorothy H. Mason
Dorothy H. Mason, 91, died Thursday, May 21, 2015, and her husband, James H. Mason, 93, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Both passed away at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, where they were residents.
Dorothy was born April 4, 1924, in Ping Ting, China to Harlan and Frances (Sheller) Smith. James was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Stet, Mo. to Charles and Dorcas (Mayden) Mason. They were married July 13, 1952 in Fort Wayne.
Dorothy graduated from Manchester University in 1945 and worked as an elementary and early education school teacher. James served in Civilian Public Service from 1942 to 1946. He received his bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater College in 1948, followed by a degree in Occupational Therapy from the Richmond Professional Institute. Before retiring in North Manchester, James and Dorothy lived in Elkhart, where they were active members in the Elkhart City Church of the Brethren and James worked as an occupational therapist with the Oaklawn Mental Health Center. Both will be remembered as avid gardeners and dedicated and loving parents, grandparents and great grandparents.
Survivors include three children: Andrea J. (Ted) Taylor, LaPorte; Patrice J. Mason, Kalamazoo, Mich.; and Craig E. Mason, Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren: Stephanie (Jeremy) Ruff, Elkhart; Craig Miller, St. Louis, Mo.; Molly (Justin) Gullman; and Megan Boley, both of Chicago; Max Taylor, Los Angeles, Calif.; Miles Taylor, Washington D.C.; and Jordan Hochstetler, Kalamazoo, Mich.; and five great-grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by four siblings: Pauline Delk; Shirley (Jim) Mishler, both of North Manchester; Edward (Jean) Smith, Naperville, Ill.; and Maurine Weaver, Tucson, Ariz. James is survived by three brother: Frank (Martha) Mason, Shelbyville, Mo.; Harold (Doris) Mason, Shirley, Ark.; and Paul (Deborah) Mason, Farmington, Pa.
Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers: Lloyd Smith; and Dwight Smith; and a sister: Helen Hiteshew. James was preceded in death by two brothers: Henry and Earl Mason.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 20, in the chapel at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester. The family will receive visitors at the chapel from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. before the service.
