Ask A Tech: Seeing Frost On Your AC Unit?
It’s never a good sign when you see ice/frost forming on the condenser, coil, or a/c line. The formation of ice can occur for multiple reasons, but there are three that are the most common.
First, and easiest to correct, is a plugged or dirty filter. Filters that are blocked will decrease air flow; in turn it prevents air from flowing through the indoor coil trapping the 40 degree temperatures. Outside units plugged with debris — typically cotton wood and grass clippings, can cause the same effect.
The second common occurrence is a malfunctioning indoor blower motor. If the motor does not function, to push air, the cold air stays put.
Lastly, there is the possibility of the air conditioners charge being off. Units that are low on refrigerant can cause temperatures in the coil to be abnormally low, leading to icing.
The best action a homeowner can take against a unit that is icing up is to turn the air conditioning off and place the fan to “on” mode, which will begin to thaw it out. If the fan is not operating, still turn the air conditioning off to start the thawing process. Homeowner’s can check to see if the indoor filter is plugged and replace if necessary. Should a clogged filter be found, wait till unit thaws and try to resume cooling. All other repairs should be diagnosed and handle by a service technician.
