Penn Punches Ticket To State Finals
The Penn baseball team will have the opportunity to claim the final state championship in Indiana for the 2014-15 school year.
The Kingsmen punched their ticket to the State Finals by hammering Homestead 12-3 Saturday night in the rain-delayed Class 4-A Plymouth Semistate contest.
The wait was well worth it for Penn in earning its first trip to the State Finals since 2001. The Kingsmen led 6-0 in the fourth inning Saturday before the game was delayed for almost three hours by thunderstorms that rolled through the area.
Penn put the game away after the long delay with a six-run sixth inning. Junior Skylar Szynski, who has committed to Indiana University, notched the pitching win to move his season mark on the mound to 9-1.
Trevor Waite led the offense for Penn with a home run and three RBI. Brandon Stesiak had two hits and drove in two runs for the Kingsmen.
Homestead, which finishes its season at 19-9, left 14 runners on base in the loss. The Spartans stranded eight in scoring position in the contest.
Penn improved to 25-9 with the victory in the game that took 4:59 to complete, including the long weather delay.
The Kingsmen, who have just two seniors, won the Northern Indiana Conference title, the Plymouth Sectional crown and the LaPorte Regional championship before adding the semistate title on Saturday night.
Penn is going for its fourth state championship this coming Saturday. The Kingsmen won state titles in 1994, 1998 and 2001 under Hall of Fame coach Greg Dikos. Dikos, now in his 29th season at Penn, has won 646 games.
Penn is scheduled to face Terre Haute North (21-11) Saturday at approximately 7 p.m. at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis in the Class 4-A title game.
The State Finals begin Friday night with Jasper (30-1) playing Andrean (29-6) in the Class 3-A finale at 7:30 p.m.
The Saturday slate has the Class 1-A game first at 1 p.m. between Shakamak (23-7) and Rockville (23-4), followed by the Class 2-A title tilt pitting South Spencer (24-2) versus Lafayette Central Catholic (30-5) and ending with the Penn-Terre Haute North matchup.
Admission to the State Finals is $9 each day.
