Kingsmen Claim Baseball State Title
INDIANAPOLIS – The combination of pitching and putting the ball in play earned the Penn baseball program a state championship Saturday night.
The Kingsmen got another strong performance on the mound and took advantage of their opportunities at the plate to top Terre Haute North 3-2 to claim the Class 4-A state title at Victory Field.
Penn pitcher Skylar Szynski allowed just three hits as the Kingsmen claimed the fourth state title in program history. The junior right-hander, who had committed to Indiana University, struck out six in improving his season mark to 10-1.
The Kingsmen, whose last state title came in 2001, scored two runs in the first inning. They took advantage of three North errors in the frame and also got an RBI double by Nik Kavadas.
Penn made it 3-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Waite.
Terre Haute North, which was held hitless through the first four innings by Szynski, scored both of their runs in the fifth frame.
Penn outhit North 5-3 and won despite leaving 12 runners on base in the contest. North committed five errors in the game.
Penn coach Greg Dikos becomes the seventh coach to win four or more state championships. The Kingsmen have never lost in a title game under Dikos, winning titles in 1994, 1998, 2001 and 2015.
Tim Lira, one of just two seniors for Penn, received the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award following the game.
Penn finishes its season at 26-9, while North closes at 21-12.
Penn will honor its latest championship team on Monday evening at 6 p.m. in the Arena at Penn High School.
