Arrests Made In Drug Case Tied To Southern Indiana HIV Outbreak
Four people have been arrested in Clark county for drugs that are connected to the HIV outbreak in southern Indiana.
According to agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Michael Elkins, 34, and Jon Morgan, 28, have been charged with felony counts of dealing in methamphetamine, possession of a narcotic and possession of a controlled substance (Opana).
Tyler Turner and William Thrower were also arrested and charged with felony dealing in methamphetamine and maintaining a common nuisance.
The DEA’s Indianapolis district office began investigating the HIV epidemic in April when it was determined many of those infected were contracting the virus by sharing needles used to inject drugs.
When Elkins and Morgan were arrested in Henryville, Indiana, a search of the truck they were driving revealed approximately four ounces of methamphetamine, 19 Opana pills and an AK 47 assault rifle. A search was also conducted at Elkins’ residence, which resulted in the seizure of additional methamphetamine and cash.
Turner and Thrower were identified as couriers and apprehended by DEA agents and Indiana State Police investigators. They were in possession of nearly one half pound of methamphetamine upon arrest.
Elkins, Morgan, Turner and Thrower are in custody in the Clark County Jail with a $50,000 cash bond.
