Would you like to start canning your own fruits and vegetables at home, but don’t know how to get started? Come to the library 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 11, and learn how. Stuart Smith and Mike Shock are two guys who like to can, and they will share what they have learned over the years. They will explain the basics of home canning, equipment needed, various techniques to use, and other tips. There will also be a prize drawing for those who attend. If you’re a canning newbie, you won’t want to miss this informative presentation. It is free and open to the public.
Afterwards at noon Saturday, July 11, library patrons will be treated to a free, Irish music performance. Musicians Sean Ellsworth-Hoffman, Adam Carter, and Irish native Rodney Cordner will blend their individual styles into a traditional Irish sound that will keep toes a-tapping.
Saturday’s activities continue in the Youth Department when kids ages 5-12 gather for Second Saturday LEGO Club at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, for some creative building fun. LEGOs are provided.
Earlier in the week 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, kids and their families are invited to fly into the library for Super Hero BINGO. Children of all ages can play using Bingo cards with super heroes on them. Playing many rounds, everyone has a chance to win with lots of prizes to choose from. This is a Summer Reading Program event, so be sure the kids bring their reading passports to get stamped for extra reading credit.
Friday Family Food and Fun on Friday, July 10, offers more family activities with a choice of three time sessions at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. Children move through four stations of activities, crafts, and snack. Pre-registration is required to attend, so stop by the youth services desk or call (574) 834-7122 ext. 202 to sign up.
There are still openings available in the Coffee and Canvas event for adults 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14. Folk artist Karla Hayden will show you step-by-step how to create a lake scene painting. The event costs $18 and includes 11×14 canvas, painting supplies, coffee, and refreshments. No artistic ability is needed, just a willingness to have fun.
Advance registration and pre-payment are needed by July 11 to participate. Sign up and pay at the Circulation Desk.
Stop in the library to play “Bust a Bandit” and try to guess who robbed the Leesburg train. With each guess, you get entered into a drawing for a free prize basket, and you can guess as many times as you like. New clues are posted every Monday. The game ends Saturday, August 1.
The Library will be closed all day Saturday, July 4, for Independence Day.
