Fishers Teacher To Compete On ‘American Ninja Warrior’
Andy Smith, a teacher from Fishers, Indiana, will compete on the NBC reality show “American Ninja Warrior” tonight.
During the school year, he teaches stage craft at Fishers High School. But he’s been watching the show since it started with his family, and his kids encouraged him to try out for it.
“My kids have always been like, ‘Dad, you can do it! You can do that stuff!’” said Smith. “So, I thought, ‘Ok, let’s go do it.’”
He sent in his entry along with nearly 50,000 other people and was surprised and honored to learn he was one of 400 chosen to be on the show.
He began training four to six days a week in his garage and his neighbor’s basement, building obstacles similar to those used on “American Ninja Warrior.”
“We tried to mimic as many elements as we could and gear my training toward that,” said Smith. “A lot of grip strength, a lot of forearm strength, a lot of swinging and a good workout. It’s got me in probably the best shape of my life.”
The show that will air tonight was actually taped earlier in the year, but Smith has managed to keep the results secret.
“It was a great experience being there, stepping onto that platform,” said Smith. “That was a win for me.”
Viewers will have to tune in tonight to find out how he faired against the competition.
