Moore Helps Team USA Claim Gold
GWANGJU, SOUTH KOREA – Nic Moore has accomplished a lot on the basketball court.
Now the former WCHS star can add a gold medal to his impressive collection of success on the hardwood.
Moore, a senior guard at SMU, helped Team USA defeat Germany 84-77 in double overtime this morning in the championship game of the World University Games.
Moore was added to the Kansas squad representing the USA and helped the Jayhawks go 8-0 over the past 11 days to claim the international title.
Moore had seven points and six rebounds in the title game win for the United States. He also added two assists and three steals in 47 minutes of action.
Wayne Selden scored 22 points to lead Team USA to its first gold medal since 2005. Perry Ellis had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Frank Mason III had 18 points and nine rebounds for the champions, who were coached by Bill Self.
Moore had five points, four rebounds and two assists on Sunday in a 78-68 win over Russia in a semifinal contest. He had nine points, four rebounds and four steals in a 70-48 win over Lithuania in a quarterfinal game on Friday night.
Moore, a 5-9 point guard, has starred at SMU the past two seasons. He led the Mustangs to an NCAA Tournament appearance this past season while earning Player of the Year honors in the American Athletic Conference. Moore began his career at Illinois State before transferring to SMU after his freshman year.
Moore, the son of Michael and Karla Moore of Winona Lake, led Warsaw to a state runner-up finish in 2010. He was an Indiana All-Star in 2011 after being runner-up for Mr. Basketball honors following his senior season playing for coach Doug Ogle. Moore is second in WCHS boys basketball history with 1,891 career points.
