Children Seriously Injured In Truck/Buggy Accident
NAPPANEE — A 6-month-old and 2-year-old were flown to Parkview Hospital after a truck hit the horse drawn buggy they were riding in. The accident occurred at 4:27 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at SR 19 and CR 50, north of Nappanee.
Caleb Smith, 24, Granger, was northbound on SR 19 when his 2011 Ford F250 truck rear ended the northbound horse drawn buggy. The buggy was being driven by Delaine Troyer, 27, Nappanee.
Troyer and her passengers: Matthew Troyer, 25, Nappanee, Ella Troyer, 2, and Noah Troyer, 6 months old, were all ejected from the buggy during the collision. Delanie Troyer and Matthew Troyer were transported to Elkhart General Hospital. Delanie Troyer suffered cuts and abrasions to her feet, knees and complained of back pain. Matthew Troyer suffered skin abrasions to the head, face, arms and knees.
Ella Troyer and Noah Troyer suffered head trauma.
Smith was not injured.
The Elkhart County Sherif’s Department is still investigating the accident. Alcohol did not initially appear to be a factor.
