Dog Rescue From Warsaw Fire Has Sad Ending
WARSAW — The rescue of a small pup from a fire located at 920 Anchorage Road, Lot 84, Shamrock Mobile Home Park Wednesday, July 22, had a sad ending today. The small shitzu mix, who was tended to by paramedics at the scene, passed away just after midnight today, Friday, July 24, at a local veterinary hospital.
According to Dr. Carla Carlton, Patches the dog was brought into Lake City Animal Clinic by paramedics. Though paramedics did the best they could for little Patches at the scene, Carlton admits he was in rough shape when he arrived at the clinic.
After consultation with a neurologist, the injuries Patches sustained ultimately overtook him and he tragically passed away by the side of veterinarians at the clinic.
Though Patches did not survive, one of two cats within the residence, named Dofus, was able to be rescued. Carlton believes Dofus will make a recovery from wounds sustained from the smoke and heat.
Carlton provided a few tips to help pet owners safeguard their fur friends should an emergency situation occur while owners are away from home. One easy way to notify rescue workers of how many pets are within a residence should a rescue be necessary is to utilize a sticker on the door that states how many animals are within the residence. Carlton noted staff at Lake City Animal Clinic have discussed getting these stickers after the fire that occurred this week.
An additional measure to help rescue workers is to keep pet tags up-to-date with current owner information. Carlton suggested having an additional emergency contact for pets in case the owner cannot be reached. In case of any pre-existing issues, Carlton recommended owners keep a tag on their pets’ collars that have their primary care veterinarian’s phone number listed. This can be a lifesaving measure in the case an animal has an ailment such as heart disease.
