Flags For Honor Event To Thank Hoosier Heroes For Service
INDIANAPOLIS — A newly formed nonprofit has big plans to honor Hoosier heroes. Flags For Honor is working on an event to thank military members, veterans, police officers, fire fighters, medics and EMTs in Indianapolis.
The plan is to fill a field in the park near the Indiana War Memorial and Vermont Street in the downtown area of the city with flags Sept. 20-27. It will be a visual statement to honor those who serve and protect.
“The flag is a very patriotic thing,” said Beth Carr, chairperson of Flags For Honor. “It’s a very moving symbol and it’s a very stirring sight when you see a sea of flags.”
The group is inviting people from across the state to sponsor a flag in the name of a hero for a $25 tax-deductible donation. They will put a yellow ribbon and dedication card on each flag with the name of a service person. When the flags are taken down, the ribbon and card will be mailed to the person being honored.
The event is a personal mission for Carr. She began Flags For Honor after she and her husband received a note in the mail from a similar dedication in honor of their son, Marine Corporal Jacob Carr. A flag had been flown in his honor in California.
The gesture meant a lot to the family, which includes many service members. Carr did some research and wanted to bring an event honoring heroes to Indiana.
“It will be very moving and hopefully people will stop and say, ‘Wow, what’s that?’ Hopefully as they read the names on the cards of each flag, they’ll put a face to someone who’s serving to protect them,” said Carr.
The goal is gratitude, on a grand scale.
Those who wish to sponsor a flag do not have to have a specific person they want to name, Flags For Honor can select a service member to receive the honor if necessary. All money raised will go to the American Legion legacy scholarship, which helps children of fallen soldiers attend college.
