Tigers Scrape Out Golf Win
WARSAW – It wasn’t pretty. But for August 5, it didn’t have to be.
Not one Warsaw golfer broke 50, but only one Rochester golfer posted a score better than 59 as the Lady Tigers managed together a 221 to best visiting Rochester’s 228 Wednesday afternoon at Stonehenge Country Club.
In just the second day of match play for the very young Tiger squad, a 50 from Madi Graham led the way as the girls became acclimated to match play on the front nine of the sectional host in September for both clubs. Graham’s playing partner from Rochester, Kinley Lingenfelter, played the course like a champ with a 36. Lingenfelter bogeyed the first hole, but went par the rest of the way until a birdie on nine closed out her round.
Graham had trouble in her round with a trio of triple bogeys, but also needed just two strokes to birdie hole eight and closed with a par on nine.
Delaney Wihebrink gave Warsaw it’s second score at 55 from the five position while Page Desenberg and Morgen Fuentes each carded 58s for Warsaw’s scoring. Madison Martz added a 60 for the Tigers.
“With Madi and Page, they seem to take their game up a little bit when the pressure is a little bit more,” said Warsaw head coach Tad Nieter. “I was really happy with how both of them played. For us, it’s just a matter of getting a three, four and five in. We’ll be right there.
“For having such a young team, that’s a good start for us.”
Rochester, which won the sectional title two years ago at Stonehenge, didn’t have much support from its cast Wednesday. Rosalie Navarro shot a 59, Renae Bickle had a 73, Ashleigh Navarro had a 70 and Jade Bennesh shot a 72 for the Zebras.
Nieter wasn’t terribly concerned with the wobbly performance, which was about where his team was Tuesday in its season opener at the Plymouth Invite. Warsaw shot a 437 on day one, about on par with day two’s nine-hole run.
“The number one thing right now is they haven’t played enough tournament golf,” Nieter said. “They are getting there. Each week, we started open practice in July and it’s amazing the progress they are making. We are getting really close. I’m sure by sectionals we will be ready.”
Warsaw’s JV posted a 244 in a non-competition round as Rochester did not field a full JV squad. Ash Jain led the home scores with a 51.
Triton was to have competed Wednesday, but did not have a full squad available for varsity competition.
Warsaw (1-0) will next be in play Saturday at the East Noble Invite, a 10 a.m. first tee for the tournament.
