INDIANAPOLIS — Former Arc of Indiana Executive Director John Dickerson says he will run for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate. The move marks the first run for public office for Dickerson, who led the organization serving people with disabilities for more than 30 years.
He made his announcement over the weekend at Shapiro’s Delicatessen in downtown Indianapolis, saying it’s a spot famous for bringing political leaders together to work on problems.
He stepped down from his position at the Arc of Indiana in July, but still serves as a consultant. He had led the organization since 1983.
Dickerson is the second Democrat in the race, joining former U.S. Rep. Baron Hill. Republican candidates include former Indiana Republican Party Chairman Eric Holcomb and U.S. Rep. Todd Young and U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman.
The Senate seat will be left open after the retirement of Senator Dan Coats.
