New Tech Inside Football Helmets Monitors Safety
MADISON COUNTY— The Pendleton Heights Arabians are one of a dozen Indiana High Schools now using a high tech system to track athlete safety on every play.
“I’m very concerned about concussions. I’ve always been concerned,” Arabians head coach John Broughton told WTHR during a recent practice. “The worst thing that can happen is the kid gets a concussion and you ignore the symptoms.”
The new technology is inserted into each of the 40 helmets to track a variety of things, including the force of impact inside the helmet. A monitor notifies trainers and coaches of potential safety concerns. They can use the information to know when to initiate a concussion protocol to determine if a player should sit out and get medical attention or go back into the game.
Ridell’s InSite sensor technology is an advantage to Broughton, who has been coaching for 40 years. “To me, anything that makes the game safer makes football better,” he said.
