Wawasee On Brink Of Huge Upset
For a Wawasee girls soccer team that hasn’t had a landmark win in several seasons, it nearly picked up a big one Saturday. Fortunes, however, couldn’t will the visitors from Syracuse a win as Westview managed to survive the upset bid in a 1-0 final.
Tied nil-nil entering the final 15 minutes, Westview’s pressure on the Wawasee defense finally produced a goal with 12 minutes remaining. A final gasp in the waning moments didn’t net an equalizer, squandering a golden opportunity to get a key result.
“We struggled with basic soccer skills today – trapping, ball control, accurate passing – which led to a lot of turnovers,” said Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch. “We are a litle disappointed because we had a good chance to get this one.”
Wawasee falls to 2-1 on the season but will get back at it Tuesday with a home match against Manchester.
Warriors Clobbered By Concord
The boys soccer program at Wawasee has not fared well against Concord in recent years, and the trend continued Saturday in Dunlap. Concord punished Wawasee’s mistakes in an 8-0 result.
The Warrior offense, which has been sluggish to start the season with only one goal in three matches, could not get started against Concord. The Minutemen continued the lopsided series, to which Concord has never lost to Wawasee in varsity boys soccer dating back to 1992, moving the series record to 24-0 all-time.
The Concord JV also beat Wawasee by a score of 5-0. The Warriors (0-3) will host Hamilton Monday at 5 p.m.
