Warsaw Sports Wrap – Aug. 25
Warsaw’s non-conference slate has been a teeter-totter on the golf courses this season, but the open of the Northern Lakes Conference was a statement Tuesday.
Shooting a 199, Warsaw bested a pair of talented clubs in Northridge (216) and Goshen (240) at Spring Meadow, site of this year’s NLC Championships.
Madi Graham easily had the round of the day, shooting a 42 to lead Warsaw and the field. Graham recorded three pars and had nothing over a bogey in her showing.
Page Desenberg shot a 49, Morgen Fuentes posted a 52 and Delaney Wihebrink had a 56 to round out the scoring for the Lady Tigers. Madison Martz added a 57.
Northridge (4-1, 1-1 NLC) was led by a 53 from Cate Tompkins. Goshen (0-2 NLC) had a 48 from Sara Rogers.
Warsaw’s JV scores had Madelyn Ray shoot 58, Izzy Ray at 62, Miriam Hagg at 69 and Shelby Paseka at 72.
Warsaw (4-1, 2-0 NLC) will host Wawasee and Concord Wednesday at Stonehenge.
Northrop Pounces On Tigers
Fort Wayne Northrop used its home field to its advantage Tuesday, dropping Warsaw 3-0 in boys soccer.
A muddy, poorly kept pitch wasn’t a total excuse, but worked to the home side’s advantage on familiarity as an early goal held up with two helpers closing the deal.
Goal scorers for Northrop were not reported.
The Warsaw JV tied Northrop 1-1. Dominic Smith tucked home the game’s first goal at the seven-minute mark. Northrop evened up three minutes into the second half.
Warsaw (1-2) will open NLC play Thursday at home against Plymouth.
Ladies Open NLC Soccer In Style
The start of the NLC girls soccer season couldn’t have ended much better for Warsaw given its 6-1 home win Tuesday against Plymouth.
Liz VanWormer and Anna Sullivan each scored a pair of goals and VanWormer added a pair of assists. Sydney Weideman added a goal and two assists and Anna Reimink started it all off with a goal in the 21st minute.
Warsaw scored in bunches, leading off with Reimink’s tally, then one from VanWormer a minute later. The Lady Tigers picked up a goal with three minutes to time in the first half, then scored its final three goals in an eight-minute spurt in the second half.
The scoring actually was in response to Plymouth’s start of the match to which it scored its goal in the third minute, forcing Warsaw to play down a goal for the first time this season.
Chloe Snow rebounded from the early goal to earn the win, making just one save.
The Plymouth JV shut out Warsaw 3-0.
Warsaw (3-0, 1-0 NLC) will visit NorthWood Thursday.
