Wawasee Remains Undefeated, Warsaw Splits
WARSAW – The wins continue to come for the Wawasee girls golf team.
After sweeping Plymouth and Elkhart Memorial on Tuesday evening, the Lady Warriors turned around and took care of business with two more Northern Lakes Conference teams Wednesday night. Wawasee shot a 178, four strokes better than its Tuesday score, at Stonehenge Golf Club to down both Warsaw (195) and Concord (206).
“It’s always nice to get a win at Stonehenge,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “We played fairly decent. We had a little trouble at four and five today, both of those girls are disappointed with how they shot. But, we got to play the sectional course and get the girls some experience here.”
Wawasee is not quite a well-oiled machine just yet, but the Lady Warriors have been playing some of their best golf as of late and are starting to get the top of their lineup into postseason form.
“We have to have that top of the order show up and they’ve been doing that the past few nights,” remarked Coverstone. “We’re pretty good one through five when you stack us up against other teams, but what would really help us is if we could get a girl in that top three to consistently start to shoot in the low 80s, high 70s.”
Coverstone’s team was on par with that request, for the most part, Wednesday night. Wawasee was led by Aubrey Schmeltz. The junior earned medalist honors with a 40 at the No. 1 spot. Kylee Rostochak, who hovers around the top spot for low averages for the Lady Warriors, came in right behind Schmeltz with a 41.
Mikala Mawhorter added a 46 for Wawasee, which was followed by a 51 from Kamryn Foy and 52 from Madison Beaman.
Warsaw was happy to pick up its third NLC win of the season by defeating Concord and coach Tad Nieter knows his team is making the rights progressions at this point in the season.
“I’m proud,” began Nieter. “Our goal was to break 195, but I’ll take it. It was pretty chilly out there tonight. Overall, I was pleased. We were well-rounded, it wasn’t like we had one person carrying us. I like how balanced we were and we had a couple girls break 50 for the first time, that was huge.”
Madi Graham recovered from a tough performance midway through the match and would shoot a 48 for the Lady Tigers. That score tied Morgan Fuentes to lead Warsaw’s effort. Madison Martz was right behind her teammates with a 48. Page Desenberg signed for a 50 while Delaney Rihbrink’s 52 rounded out the scores for Warsaw.
“Two people breaking 50 for the first time is a huge confidence boost,” Nieter continued. “Next they will aim for 45s and hopefully 40s. Breaking that milestone of 50 is just great to see. Now the girls know they can do t and it’s setting us up well to continue to compete.”
Concord was led by Erika Shirley’s 43.
Warsaw (6-2, 3-1) will travel to Culver Military Academy Monday. Wawasee (11-0, 4-0) will host Goshen Tuesday.
In the junior varsity match it was Warsaw’s Madelyn Ray leading the way to medalist honors with a 51. Wawasee escaped with the win 230-242 over Warsaw.
