Key Clashes Highlight Week Two Prep Slate
It shapes up as an interesting week two for area Northern Lakes Conference football teams tonight.
Teams will look to build some momentum before jumping into league play next Friday night.
The Goshen Redskins look to make it two in a row with a home date versus Elkhart Central. Goshen snapped a 23-game losing streak in its opener with a 26-7 win at Fairfield. The Redskins have not been 2-0 since the 2008 season.
Concord will try to avoid its first 0-2 start since 2003 by getting an early start on its NLC season. The Minutemen, under new coach Craig Koehler, host Elkhart Memorial in the league opener. Concord dropped a 37-24 final to South Bend St. Joseph a week ago. Memorial, under new coach Scot Shaw, fell 28-25 to city rival Central. Concord has won 13 in a row over Memorial.
Another game with strong local ties to Warsaw will take place at Freed Field. Penn will host Merrillville tonight. Merrillville is coached by former Warsaw standout Brad Seiss, who spent the last three seasons as the coach at Muncie Central. The Pirates lost their opener to Andrean 15-12, while Penn steamrolled Valparaiso 34-0 in week one.
