Wawasee Top Four At Prairie Heights
The Wawasee girls cross country team placed second while the boys team finished fourth at the Panther Run hosted by Prairie Heights Saturday morning.
Aubrey Kuhn had a top-ten finish for the Lady Warriors, taking ninth with her time of 21:11 to lead the club. McKenzie Smith had a personal best time of 21:35 and Autumn Yoder also had a PR with her 24:41. Yanelly Pizana ran a 23:02 to achieve a top season time.
Elizabeth Zorn ran a 22:25, Bailey Schroeder clocked 23:22 and Keyanna Clevenger finished at 24:56 to round out the varsity times.
Bishop Dwenger won the girls title with 42 points, Wawasee close behind with 70 points. Lindsey Marriott of Leo won the race with a time of 19:37.
“The girls ran well on sore, tired legs,” stated Wawasee girls head coach Doug Slabaugh. “Over three-fourths of the girls ran over 30 seconds faster compared to last year on this course.”
Spencer Hare led the Wawasee boys with a PR time of 17:25, landing in seventh place overall. Luke Griner (17:50), Sam Griner (18:31), Ben Hoffert (18:32) and Braxton Alexander (19:25) rounded out the top five Wawasee times.
West Noble scored 40 points to win the invitational, followed by Dwenger (72), Leo (114) and Wawasee (115) in the top four positions.
Prairie Heights’ Mitch Perkins mastered his home course to take the individual title with a time of 16:49.
“Good, strong run on a tough course,” started Wawasee boys head coach Chad Hoffert. “Looking forward to our first Northern Lakes Conference contest on Tuesday (vs. Plymouth/Memorial). That is where we will see how our training for the past two weeks is paying off.”
The NLC triangular Tuesday at Wawasee will start at 5:30 p.m. with the girls meet, followed by the boys meet.
Concord Stymies Wawasee Soccer
A dominant showing by Concord afforded a 7-0 result over Wawasee in varsity girls soccer Saturday morning in Dunlap.
Concord netted four girls in the first half and kept the beat going in the final 40 minutes. Goal scorers were not immediately announced.
“They are a good program,” noted Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch. “We played hard throughout. It was a good experience for our players to take on a higher quality opponent. We need to learn from it and it will only help us going forward.
Haleigh Smarr scored a goal for the Wawasee JV, but Concord had more firepower in a 3-1 final.
Wawasee, which started the season with two wins, is 0-2-1 in its last three matches and will visit powerful Argos Thursday.
JV Gridders Pummel Chargers
Wawasee’s ground game ate up West Noble in a 41-0 final Saturday morning in JV football.
Dylan Hepler ran 58 yards in just three carries and scored twice. Will Geer had 13 carries for 103 yards and a score and Kollin Bell added a touchdown run.
Wawasee’s defense pitched the shut out, forcing a pair of Charger turnovers.
The Warriors will host Northridge next Saturday.
