MENTONE — Take a rugged horse rancher and competition rodeo roper out of his canyons of color in an Idaho environment and thrust him into the Midwest in a little town in Indiana, where the land is plain and flat for farming and what happens? Those memories of a colt scampering down a gully in front of awesome mountain peaks can’t be contained. The work of Robert Hudson comes boiling out of his mind like a cauldron of flashbacks.

Subject matter includes old mountain men and Native Americans astride their mustangs and ponies as they eke out life in the harsh yet breathtaking beauty of the west.

Hudson uses music to help elicit those memories, but he also incorporates new music such as murals of Indiana, paintings of people, pencil work nudes, book covers of sea captains and portraits of a symphony conductor or a curmudgeon sheriff. Demand continues to build for his pieces in any genre and he continues to store up recognition and awards for all his work. He seldom enters any competition without adding another ribbon to his collection.

An exhibit, titled, “The First Annual Fall Equinox,” is set for Saturday, Sept. 26, the Hudson home, Mentone, and is largely invitation only. However, for a limited time, those who would like to make a free reservation can call (574) 267-8737.
