Torres, Baez Headed To Myrtle Beach
SOUTH BEND – South Bend shortstop Gleyber Torres and outfielder Jeffrey Baez have been promoted to Advanced-A Myrtle Beach while infielder Daniel Spingola and catcher Jordan Hankins join the South Bend Cubs.
The 18-year old Torres leaves South Bend after playing in 119 games hitting .297 with a .353 on base percentage. Torres hit three home runs and drove in a team best 62 runs.
Torres recently was named the Midwest League’s Prospect of the Year in a vote of the 16 field managers. The Venezuela native also was the Eastern Division’s starting shortstop at the Midwest League All Star Game and was selected to the Midwest League’s Post-Season Team.
The Chicago Cubs signed Torres as a non-drafted free agent in 2013.
Baez appeared in 101 games with South Bend hitting .284. Baez leaves South Bend as the team’s leader with 67 runs scored, nine home runs and 34 stolen bases.
Baez was hitting .176 entering play on July 10th before collecting 26 multi-hit games over his last 44 games.
The 21-year old Baez was signed by the Chicago Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2010.
Spingola started his professional career this summer with the Cubs Rookie League team and collected nine hits in 17 trips to the plate with seven runs batted in. The Georgia native joined Eugene on August 20 and picked up one hit in eight plate appearances.
Spingola did not sign with the Chicago Cubs after being drafted in the round 24 of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Cubs drafted Spingola again in the round 31 this summer.
Hankins joins South Bend from the Advanced-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans where he hit .227 in 23 games with one home run and six runs batted in.
The 2013 eleventh round pick of the Chicago Cubs played in 50 games in the Midwest League last season with Kane County. Hankins posted a .322 average with three home runs and 34 driven in.
