Foresters Get Best Of Lancers On Opening Day
HUNTINGTON – Huntington outdueled Grace’s women’s tennis team in the first match of the season on Wednesday.
Freshman Jenna Jackson had a strong debut for Grace and had a part in both of the team’s points in a 7-2 defeat.
Jackson teamed up with Katie Etter to earn Grace’s first win of the season 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. Natalia Kurkova and Molly Fitzpatrick nearly pulled out a win at No. 1 doubles before falling 8-6.
All six of the singles’ matches were straight-set decisions between Grace and the Foresters (1-0, 1-0 Crossroads League).
Jackson continued her impressive collegiate opener by winning at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-4. Jackson was the only Lady Lancer (0-1, 0-1 CL) to win during singles’ play, however, allowing Huntington to ease away for victory.
Mariah Zumbrun dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 6-3 match at No. 6 singles, and Kurkova lost 3-6, 1-6 at No. 1.
“Huntington is a very good team and gave us all we could handle tonight,” said Grace head coach Scott Moore. “We will learn from tonight and get better.”
The Lady Lancers will play at the Blueberry Festival over the weekend before resuming league play on Sept. 8 against St. Francis.
