Man Perishes Following Weekend Watercraft Accident
NORTH WEBSTER — Following a watercraft accident that occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, one man has tragically succumbed to his injuries.
According to a press release issued by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources law enforcement division, witnesses stated Jeffery Melvin, 53, Columbia City, was operating a personal watercraft on Lake Webster when he made an immediate and abrupt right turn into the path of another personal watercraft.
A friend of Melvin was operating the other watercraft and attempted to turn to avoid a collision. When the two watercraft vehicles collided, second watercraft ramped over the one that Melvin was riding and struck him in the right side of his torso. Melvin was transported to Samaritan Hospital in Fort Wayne where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.
Indiana Conservation Officers are continuing to investigate this fatal incident. No foul play is suspected.
