‘Smoke On The Mountain’ Returns To Round Barn Theatre
NAPPANEE — Back by popular demand, the Sanders Family returns to the Joseph Stein Stage in “Smoke on the Mountain” at The Round Barn Theatre.
”Smoke on the Mountain” premiered Off-Broadway in 1990, and ran for nearly 500 performances on its way to becoming one of the most produced shows worldwide. The title of the show derived from Psalm 104: 32: “He who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke.” It has also spawned two sequels, “The Sanders Family Christma”s and “Smoke on the Mountain: Homecoming,” which was produced at The Round Barn Theatre in 2011.
“Smoke on the Mountain” tells the story of the Sanders family and their Saturday Night Gospel concert at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in 1938. It features over two dozen rousing southern gospel and bluegrass songs sung and played by the Sanders family, a traveling group making it return to performing after a five year hiatus. Though they try to appear perfect to the congregation, a sequence of “witnessing” from each family member reveals their true … and hilariously … imperfect nature. Originally produced on the Joseph Stein Stage in 2000, “Smoke on the Mountain” was so popular with audiences, that it was given a revival in 2005.
“Smoke on the Mountain” will be directed by frequent guest director and perennial leading lady Amber Burgess, who recently lent her directorial talents to the spring production of “The Marvelous Wonderettes.” As RBT’s resident costume designer, Burgess will also provide the costumes, and will be featured on stage as Vera Sanders. In addition to Burgess, the production features RBT Alumni, Ryan A. Schisler as Mervin Oglethorpe, and Perry Orfanella as Uncle Stanley. Rounding out the cast will be newcomers Paul Kerr as Burl, Jocelyn Lonquist as Denise, Jeff Raab as Dennis and Katherine Yacko as June. Resident Music Director Travis Smith once again provides music direction.
“Smoke on the Mountain” runs through Oct. 18 with 2 p.m. matinees and 8 p.m. evening performances.
