Warsaw Sports Wrap – Sept. 15
Warsaw concluded its girls golf regular season with a 201 to best both Whitko (250) and Triton (268) Tuesday afternoon at Stonehenge Golf Club.
Madi Graham birdied her last two holes to finish with a medalist 46 for the Lady Tigers. Morgen Fuentes wrapped up her final regular season match as a senior with a 50. Page Desenberg shot a 52 and Delaney Wihebrink finished at 53 to give Warsaw its final score. Madison Martz had a 60 as the fifth score.
Claire Reiff led the Wildcats with a 51, followed by Aurelia Slusher at 58, Holly Hathaway at 63, Makayla Compton at 78 and Alexis Rider at 80.
For the Trojans, Tessa Heaton came in at 59, Kayla Kreft and Kate Gardner each had 63 and Sam Edington finished at 83.
Warsaw was the lone JV to compete Tuesday. Izzy Ray had a 59, Madelyn Ray a 60, Miriam Hagg a 63 and Shelby Paseka a 67.
Warsaw finishes at 9-5 overall and will host the Warsaw Girls Golf Sectional this Saturday at Stonehenge. The top three teams and three individuals not from an advancing team will make the regional round. Sectional play will begin at 11 a.m.
Volleyball Muscles Past Columbia City
In a hard-fought matchup Tuesday night at Columbia City, the Warsaw varsity volleyball team defeated Columbia City 3-1. Warsaw grabbed game one 25-23, only for City to win game two by the same score. Warsaw then posted matching 25-19 scores in the next two for the win.
Warsaw’s lineup was back to full strength after Peyton Adamiec and Cassie Hoag returned from injuries. Adamiec had 32 digs to lead the club while Hoag led with 37 assists. Jordyn Lindeman and Lexie Day each led the team with 16 kills and Day added four blocks. Caroline Mayer was big time Tuesday, scoring a whopping 13 aces, 24 digs and 11 kills.
Warsaw moves to 11-5 on the season with the road win.
Warsaw’s JV moved to 14-1 overall with a 25-19, 25-8 win against City. Katie Swanson led Warsaw with five kills, four aces and a block. Amy Herendeen had eight digs, Alicia Sikora had 17 assists and Nikki Parrett had five kills for the Lady Tigers.
The Tiger program will host Plymouth Thursday night in Northern Lakes Conference play.
Panthers Too Tough For Tigers
NorthWood played a physical game Tuesday night and came out the better side, winning 3-1 at Warsaw in NLC boys soccer.
Isaac Bowser opened the match’s scoring in the first minute of the second half, taking a Brayton Taylor feed and finding the net.
Warsaw pulled level in the 52nd minute when Eduardo Calderon found the net unassisted. But NorthWood used a goal from Taylor four minutes later and put the match away with five minutes to go when Juan Pantoja made it 3-1.
Warsaw falls to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the NLC while NorthWood improves to 5-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the NLC.
Alvaro Aguillon had the lone goal of the JV match, a 1-0 winner for Warsaw over NorthWood.
The Warsaw varsity will host Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger Saturday morning while the Tiger JV will play in the NLC Invite hosted by Goshen.
Cross Country Remains Unbeaten
Warsaw’s boys and girls cross country teams moved to 5-0 overall in the NLC with resounding wins Tuesday at Plymouth Country Club. The boys defeated Concord 15-44 and Plymouth 16-45 while the girls went 15-43 over Concord and 15-50 over Plymouth.
The boys knocked off previously undefeated Concord with Lucas Howett winning the race with a time of 17:18, his first win of the season. Owen Glogovsky was second at 17:18, Zeb Hernandez third at 17:30 and Xavi Ramirez fourth at 17:57 in an impressive front run for the Tigers. Jon Beres was sixth at 18:15 to conclude the scoring for Warsaw. TJ Day (11, 18:41) and Nate Gottschalk (12, 18:47) wrapped up the varsity legs.
The girls placed all seven of its varsity runners in the top 10, taking the top three spots overall. Mia Beckham led the way with a 20:54, with Brooke Rhodes on pace at 20:56 and Emma Hayward at 20:57. Mallory Hooks was fifth at 21:50 in her best varsity finish of the season, Charlene Orr right behind in sixth at 21:54, Lauren Orr eighth at 22:21, and Angie Vijil Sanchez earning her first top-10 of the season in 10th at 22:23.
Warsaw will look to wrap up the NLC titles in undefeated fashion next Tuesday against Goshen and host Elkhart Memorial.
Before that, Warsaw will run Saturday at the prestigious New Prairie Invite, where much of the potential semi-state teams Warsaw could face will compete.
