James R. Smith
James R. Smith, 73, a longtime Marshall County resident, passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth Campus.
Jim was born Dec. 11, 1941, at Plymouth, Indiana to Elvin E. and Lucille (Ritchey) Smith. He was a lifelong resident and was a graduate of Tyner High School in 1960. Jim previously worked for Deluxe Sheet Metal and retired from Midland Engineering of South Bend. He was a member of Knights of Columbus; St. Michaels Catholic Church; Hoosier Old Wheels and Union Sheet Metal Mechanics Local #20.
On Oct. 7, 1961, he joined in marriage to Mary (Tatar), she survives along with their two children: Christina Marie (Michael) Harmeyer, Fort Wayne; and Gregory James (Anita) Smith, New Carlisle; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters: Dusty Lane, Covina, Calif.; Mary Anne Smith, Austin, Texas; and his four brothers: Donald (Rosemary) Smith, West Point, Wash.; Earl (Trudy) Smith, Niles, Mich.; Bill (Sue) Smith, Plymouth; and John (Beverly) Smith, St. Louis, Mis. James was preceded in passing my his parents and his sister: Virginia McCormick.
The Smith family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Funeral services in honor of James will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, in St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Burial will follow in the St. Michaels Cemetery at Plymouth.
The family requests memorial contributions in his memory be made to Indiana Organ Donor Procurement Organization, Indianapolis.
