New Charges Filed, Mother Also Arrested
PLYMOUTH — Initial charges against a 23-year-old Plymouth man, of neglect of a dependent, a level 3 felony, and possession of marijuana, a level 6 felony, have been upgraded and the child’s mother arrested, according to Plymouth Police Detective Sgt. Leo Mangus.
Shane Weedling, 23, Plymouth, was initially charged after a 2-year-old was brought to St. Joseph Medical Center, Friday afternoon, Sept. 18, unconscious with a serious head injury by her mother, Krysti M. Lavanway. Older injuries were also present. Due to the critical condition of the toddler, she was flown to Lutheran Hospital Fort Wayne, where she died on the evening of Sept. 19.
An autopsy Monday of Serenity Wilson, 2, Plymouth, has determined her death was a homicide as a result of multiple blunt force injuries to the head.
Weedling and Lavanway, 24, both residing in the 2500 block of North Michigan Street, Plymouth, are now being charged in the child’s death.
Weedling’s charges have been upgraded to aggravated battery, resulting in death, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and possession of marijuana with a prior conviction, all level 1 felonies.
Lavanway has been arrested for neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a level 1 felony.
Bond has been set at $100,000 cash for both.
