Silver Lake Council Accepts Blight Elimination Bid
SILVER LAKE — The regular meeting of the Silver Lake Town Council moved along quickly Wednesday evening, Oct. 14.
The council approved additional appropriations for the general fund, then moved on to opening bids for the blight elimination program.
Clerk-treasurer Tonya Conley received and opened one bid, which was from Greene Excavating, Warsaw, for demolition of blighted properties. The bids were $4,500 for the property at 10500 S. Pleasant St., $5,000 for 10513 S. Indian Trail and $8,449 for 3218 W. Shutt Ave. for a total of $17,949.
A question was raised as to why one property cost considerably more than the others, to which council members responded that it will require the most cleanup. The board approved using Greene Excavating on the condition that their bid contains all of the necessary paperwork.
Under new business, Conley noted that LifeMed had requested payment for services in 2014, to which she had responded that they did not have a contract. The council approved signing a contract with LifeMed, which will be the same as for 2015.
Assistant Fire Chief John Conley expressed interest in a mutual aid agreement, with LifeMed continuing to be the town’s primary EMS provider but a secondary service in place, in case of multiple calls at one time. The council agreed to look into ambulance services in the area.
Tonya Conley also announced that the town’s annual budget adoption meeting will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the town hall. The next regular meeting has been moved to Tuesday, Nov. 10, in observance of Veterans Day.
Other items were as follows:
- Leaf vacuuming is slated to begin next week.
- Trick or treat is set for 6:30-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The town harvest party will be at the same time at the old fire station.
- Hydrant flushing is set for next week, likely to begin Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Conley recommended adjusting water bills for several residents who experienced water leaks over the last several months, to make up for the extra charges. The board agreed.
- While nothing is definite, the board also briefly discussed the possibility of a Christmas decorating contest for December. However, no decisions were made pertaining to this topic.
