Man Charged In February Crash That Injured Himself, Children
WARSAW — Larry W. Rex, 36, 710 Jay St., Ligonier, has been preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, enhanced to a level 6 felony, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated a class C misdemeanor. The charges are a result of a Feb. 13 accident that injured himself and his three children.
Charges were filed on Sept. 24, in Kosciusko Superior Court II. Rex was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 5:24 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9.
Rex suffered a fracture, dislocation to the knee/lower leg and foot. Also injured were three children: Kira Rex, 8, suffering a fracture, dislocation of the lower arm; Linken A. Rex, 4, complaining of pain to the abdomen/pelvis; and Marlee J. Rex, 6, who suffered a contusion/bruise to the abdomen/pelvis. All four occupants were taken to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
The accident occurred at 10:22 p.m. on East CR 1400N, west of North East Wawasee Drive, Syracuse. Rex was eastbound on CR 1400N in a 1999 Honda Accord. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in the opposite direction of travel. Rex admitted to police, that evening, he had been drinking alcoholic beverages and taken prescription medication not prescribed to him.
An alcohol/drug blood draw was administered at the hospital.
Court documents show at the scene the officer smelled an odor of alcohol and Rex had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. He told police he had taken Xanax, Percocet and Vicodin.
Rex’s bond was set at $750.
