ELKHART COUNTY — The Indiana Department of Transportation announced the completion of the intersection improvement at SR 19 and SR 119 just north of Nappanee. The roundabout opened to traffic Monday, Nov. 16.
The single-lane roundabout improves access to SR 19, SR 119 and CR 44 and is designed to accommodate oversized trucks.
Roundabout driving tips:
- Slow down on the approach to the roundabout
- Look left
- Yield to traffic inside the roundabout
- Merge into the traffic flow
About roundabouts:
Roundabouts use circular lanes to carry traffic in the same direction to various points of the intersection. The advantages to a roundabout include free flowing traffic without obstructions such as stop signs or signals, which can result in delays. Roundabouts also reduce the number of crashes, injuries from crashes and property damage.
This project also included the replacement of a box culvert over Christophel Ditch. The entire project was constructed by Walsh & Kelly Inc. for $2.5 million.
