Nappanee’s Miracle at Main and Market Goes On Despite Snowy Weather
NAPPANEE — The early season snowfall that left much of northern Indiana a slushy, snowy mess did little to deter the residents of Nappanee, who turned out en masse for the eighth annual Miracle at Main and Market Streets Christmas Parade. Not often is a local parade led by a camel, but it was a real live pachyderm that led the procession through the town’s streets.
Unfortunately, the weather did keep several school-sponsored groups from participating in the event, including the marching band and choirs from NorthWood High School. Numerous other parade entries, including groups representing the Boys and Girls Club of Nappanee, the Nappanee Public Library and New Life Church, made sure the crowd lining the streets was entertained and plied with sweet treats.
Following the parade, the community gathered at the newly constructed pavilion that was built on the southwest corner of Market and Clark streets. They were treated to hot drinks and cookies while warming by one of six new propane outdoor heaters recently acquired by the city.
Introduced by the event’s chairperson Alison Stair, longtime Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson welcomed the gathered crowd before reading the biblical Christmas story.
Because of the weather, the elementary students who were scheduled to sing were not present. Instead, NorthWood students Zachary Snider and Madison Kuhn led the gathering in several Christmas carols. The evening’s events concluded with the traditional singing of Silent Night, along with the lighting of handheld white candles.
“What a great night in Nappanee to hold an event under our new pavilion,” said Nappanee Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeff Kitson. “It just shows the commitment of our residents to come out in less than perfect weather to support our community.”
“It has been an honor and privilege to be part of this event for the last eight years,” added Thompson, who will step down as the town’s mayor in January. “I look forward to remaining a part of this Christmas celebration for many years to come.”
