You Read About The Charges, What Is The Status?
KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — Readers of Ink Free News have viewed individual stories on people arrested on charges ranging from theft to murder, drug related offenses to child molesting and rape. So what is the status of these cases? Were they forgotten? No longer news?
A majority of these cases are still going through the pre-trial process, but a number of cases have moved on to trials, plea hearings and sentencings. Here is an update of cases and status of the court proceedings:
Sentencings Scheduled
Derek L. Corbran, 22, Mentone, charged with two counts of child molesting, will be sentenced in Wabash County Circuit Court, Monday, Nov. 30. Related: Mentone Man Appears In Court On Child Molesting Charges.
Emily S. Zartman, 20, Warsaw, charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. She pleaded guilty and will be sentenced Monday, Nov. 30. Related: Guilty Plea Entered In Zartman Case; and Mother Charged with Neglect After Infant Injured.
Jason Bontrager, 36, Syracuse, charged with corrupt business influence and dealing in a synthetic drug or synthetic drug lookalike substance, with an amended charge of conspiracy to commit dealing in a synthetic drug. He pleaded guilty to the amended charge and will be sentenced at 9 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 1. Related: Plea Agreements Entered In Several Cases; Update: Stimmel arrested on corrupt business influence.
Vanessa E. Arnold, 21, Warsaw, charged with robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, will be sentenced on Thursday, Dec. 3. Related: Bonds Increased On Robbery Suspects; Third Robbery Suspect Arrested
Madison McKenzie Jones, 19, Milford, charged with battery to a person less than 14 years of age by a person at least 18 years of age causing serious bodily injury, and neglect of a dependent, entered a guilty plea of battery resulting in serious bodily injury and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. Zachary Springer, 27, Claypool, pleaded guilty to robbery resulting in bodily injury and will be sentenced at 9 a.m. Dec. 17 in Kosciusko Superior Court 1. Plea Hearings Set
The following individuals are scheduled to change their initial not-guilty plea to guilty during a plea agreement hearing:
Sabas Muniz, 41, Warsaw, charged with possession of cocaine and resisting law enforcement, is scheduled for a plea charging on Nov. 30. Related: Man Arrested For Having Cocaine At April Concert.
Jaron W. Wiggs, 27, Syracuse, who was arrested on charges of criminal confinement, arson, two count of intimidation, battery with moderate bodily injury and battery resulting in bodily injury, is scheduled to have a plea hearing Thursday, Dec. 3. Heather L. May, 30, Warsaw, charged with dealing in a narcotic drug, more than one gram and possession of a narcotic drug, is scheduled for a plea hearing on Dec. 7. Related: Multiple Charges Filed Against Warsaw Couple
Xavier Juarez, 21, Warsaw, charged with two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, is scheduled for a plea agreement on Dec. 10. Related: Man Charged With Sexual Misconduct.
Ryan Daniel Poe, 56, Warsaw, charged with murder, is scheduled to have a plea hearing on Dec. 21. Related: Warsaw Man Accused Of Shooting Father.
Jared Thomas Frantz, 28, Syracuse, charged with dealing in a schedule 1 controlled substance and conspiracy to commit dealing in a schedule 1 controlled substance is scheduled to have a plea hearing on Jan. 11. Related: Frantz Connected To Teens Drowning Deaths.
Trials Set
Dustin Edward Owens, 41, Silver Lake, charged with two counts of child molesting, is scheduled for a two-day jury trial beginning Dec. 15. Related: Owens Charged With Two Counts Of Child Molesting.
Scott Leon Wilkins, 33, Milford, originally charged with causing death when operating a motor vehicle, failure to remain after accident, two counts of causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of an accident, and amended to failure to comply with acts required of a driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in death, with charges of failure to remain after accident, two counts of causing serious bodily injury being dismissed. Charles M. Williams, 21, Waukegan, Ill., charged with rape and sexual battery, is scheduled for a three-day jury trial starting Jan. 12. Related: Illinois Man Arrested For Warsaw Rape.
Sam Stimmel, 66, North Webster, who was arrested for corrupt business influence, dealing in a synthetic drug or synthetic drug lookalike substance, dealing in a synthetic drug or synthetic drug lookalike substance, promoting prostitution and dealing in a schedule I controlled substance, is scheduled for a three-day jury trial starting March 8. Brandon Thomas Woody, 23, Syracuse, charged with murder, is scheduled for a seven-day jury trial starting April 28. Kyle David DeHart, 23, Syracuse, charged with murder, is scheduled for a seven-day jury trial starting April 28. Oscar Steven McDowell, 33, Chicago, Ill., is scheduled for a four-day jury trial starting May 17. Related: Second Suspect In Rape Arrested.
There are numerous other cases featured, but have not been set for additional court hearings other than a pre-trial. A pre-trial is a meeting between the judge, prosecution and defense attorney to discuss any changes in the status of the case.
