LAS VEGAS – Nic Moore continues to have a stellar senior season for the SMU men’s basketball team.
Moore, a former star at WCHS, led the undefeated Mustangs to the tournament title of the Las Vegas Classic Wednesday night.
Moore netted 16 points as the No. 18 Mustangs topped Colorado 70-66 in the championship contest.
SMU, which improved to 11-0 with the win, trailed by eight points in the second half before using a 14-1 run to come back for the victory. The Mustangs won despite going 0-5 from the field, while Colorado hit 12-27 shots from distance.
Moore was named the Tournament MVP following Wednesday night’s win. He was 7-16 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line in the title game with three rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Moore, a senior point guard, poured in 25 points Tuesday night as SMU topped Kent State 90-74 in a semifinal game of the tourney. He also had eight assists and four steals, both season highs, in the win.
SMU coach Larry Brown returned to coach the team Tuesday night after a nine-game suspension by the NCAA for violations in the program. The Mustangs are not eligible to play in the NCAA Tournament this year due to sanctions imposed on the program. SMU reached the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time since 1993.
Moore, who led Warsaw to a state runner-up finish his junior season and was an Indiana All-Star, is the top scorer for the Mustangs.
SMU is one of just five undefeated men’s basketball teams in the country.
SMU returns to action at Tulsa Tuesday night.
