No. 19 Huntington Shoots Past Grace
WINONA LAKE – Grace’s women’s basketball team was unable to solve the marksmanship of No. 19 Huntington on Wednesday, falling 76-63.
The Foresters (12-5, 2-3 Crossroads League) shot 53 percent for the game and hit 21-of-24 from the foul line at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
Grace struggled to slow down Huntington’s efficient attack in the opening half. The Foresters netted 21 points in the first quarter and 20 more in the second to take a 41-32 lead at halftime.
Huntington shot 60 percent in the first half, including 50 percent from beyond the arc.
Grace trailed by eight points after less than six minutes of play. The deficit grew to 13 with 3:30 left in the second quarter before Grace made a late push.
Brooke Sugg scored seven quick points to end the half, helping the Lady Lancers (5-12, 0-5 CL) stay within striking distance.
Grace helped its cause by outrebounding Huntington by five in the first half, including seven offensive boards.
The Lady Lancers’ defense started to give Huntington issues in the third quarter. A high-pressure fullcourt defense forced the Foresters into a few mistakes, and Grace made a run. A 3-pointer from Kelsie Peterson trimmed Huntington’s lead to 47-41 at the midway point of the third.
But Grace’s offense hit a dry spell for the final four minutes of the quarter. The Lady Lancers only managed a late 3-pointer from Sugg for the rest of the period; Huntington capitalized and stretched its lead back up to 13 by the quarter’s end.
Grace was unable to mount a substantial comeback in the fourth quarter and trailed by double digits until the final horn.
Sugg scored 14 points off the bench, adding two steals and three rebounds in 18 minutes. Peterson produced 13 points with a trio of 3-pointers.
Sarah Feasby made 5-of-6 from the floor for 11 points, tallying six boards and two steals. Haley Richardson scored 11 points, and Hannah Adams added four points and four rebounds.
For the game, Grace shot 36 percent from the floor which included 5-of-20 beyond the arc. Grace struggled from the free throw line, missing seven of its 17 attempts (59 percent).
As a team, Grace grabbed 16 offensive rebounds — five from Feasby and four from Richardson.
Huntington, who entered the game with the nation’s best assist-to-turnover ratio, was forced into 13 turnovers with 10 assists.
The Lady Lancers will finish out the week by hosting No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
