Young Closing In On Zolman, Bailey
PRINCETON – The state’s leading scorer in girls basketball is quickly closing in on the state’s career scoring record.
Princeton’s Jackie Young scored 39 points last night in the Tigers’ 59‐39 win over Vincennes Lincoln to bring her career total to 3,020 points, the second‐most in girls state history.
That number is just 65 points behind Shanna Zolman who scored 3,085 for Wawasee from 1998-2002. During last night’s game, Young became the second girl and fifth Indiana high school player to eclipse the 3,000-point mark in state history, joining Damon Bailey (3,134), Zolman (3,085), Marion Pierce (3,019) and DeShaun Thomas (3,018).
Princeton (19‐0), winner of 45 straight games, tops the state’s Class 3A coaches poll and Young leads the state at 38.4 points per game. The Tigers play at Washington on Saturday and Wood Memorial next Thursday (Jan. 14) when Young could set the new career scoring record at her current pace. Beyond that, Princeton still has five more regular season games as well as the state tournament to add to her final total.
Young has topped the 50‐point mark twice in the last two seasons. She scored a career high 57 points last season
against Mt. Carmel (Ill.) on Dec. 8, 2014 which tied for fourth‐most in a regular season game in state history. She also poured in 53 points earlier this season against Gibson Southern on Nov. 20.
Last year, Young became the first girl to score 1,000 points in a season and the fifth player in Indiana high school basketball history. The 6‐1 Notre Dame signee topped out at 1,003 for the season including 36 points in the Tigers’ 72‐44 win over Tippecanoe Valley in the 3A game for their first girls basketball state championship.
