Wallet Hub Study Ranks Indiana Number 26 For Racial Progress
INDIANA — Indiana nearly made the top half in a study by Wallet Hub that examined the 50 states to see where they stand today as far as racial progress.
The study comes as the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day draws near. It specifically focuses on the African American and Caucasian communities and attempts to rate where the 50 states and the District of Columbia stand as far as racial progress
“Although equality and integration of all racial minorities is important, our analysis compares only black and white groups in light of the recent events that have caused racial tensions to resurface at high levels in the U.S. and the historical fact that the Civil Rights Movement — in which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., played a prominent role — primarily involved black and white groups,” Richie Bernardo, writer for Wallet Hub, said in the study.
Factors taken into account include gaps in the following areas: median income, labor force participation rates, unemployment rates, homeownership, poverty, business ownership, education levels, NEAP test scores and turnout at the 2012 Presidential election.
Overall, Indiana ranked number 26 among the states for racial progress. Coming in at number one was Hawaii. In last place was Minnesota.
Next, the study looked at racial integration levels in these states. In this portion of the study, Indiana’s score dropped, with the state ranking at number 38 overall, with Georgia in the number one spot and Maine at number 51.
