Wawasee Well-Balanced In Dual Debut
SYRACUSE — Another meet, another impressive result.
The Wawasee gymnastics team was back in action as it opened its dual season by hosting Angola Tuesday evening. The Lady Warriors took the top four spots in each of the four events to earn a 100.28-80.70 victory.
“There was a lot of good stuff,” said Wawasee head coach Nika Prather. “A lot of good floor routines, a lot of connecting bar routines. I couldn’t be happier right now.”
It all went so well that it’s hard to know where to start with Wawasee’s performance. Perhaps the most impressive event was the beam.
Wawasee, which has struggled mightily with beam in years past, had four no-fall routines Tuesday night, an astounding number for the young team. Meghan Beer, Ashleigh Frecker, Reagan Atwood and Haleigh Smarr had the no-fall performances for the Warriors. Wawasee earned the top five spots in the challenging event as Atwood took first with a score of 9.1, her second score over 9.0 on beam this year. Frecker earned second with her score of 8.00. Jada Parzygnot’s 7.60 was good enough for third while Katelyn Baker took fourth (7.50) and Alyssa Minnix (7.40) placed fifth.
“That was definitely a highlight tonight,” Prather said “If we can continue to keep four girls from falling, that would be great. But our issue will be consistency. We had four no-falls tonight, but will that carry over? We have to keep consistent.
“The girl that I was really impressed with tonight was Ciandra Ervin who competed for the first time. She did not do gymnastics in middle school so this was a big meet for her and I thought she did very well. Also, Meghan Beer, she was celebrating her 16th birthday and wanted to have a great meet and that’s just what she did. She had a no-fall routine on the beam and took first for the event in the JV meet.”
On that bars Wawasee was just as surprising, stringing together several great performances.
Parzygnot led the way with a first place score of 8.10. Atwood was close behind with an 8.05. Baker took third with a 7.30 and finishing fourth was Smarr, with a score of 7.25.
“Our bar routines looked very good,” Prather continued, wearing a big smile. “For the most part we had really good routines, Meghan Beer, Katelyn Baker to name a few. Jada did very well, of course. Marley Erlenwein struggled, but she was very nervous. Overall we were just very excited with how the girls did on bars tonight.”
There wee a few hiccups during the vault routine to start, but Wawasee still did very well. Frecker took first with an 8.65, Atwood came in second with an 8.55 and Parzygnot was not far behind in third with her score of 8.50. Minnix took fourth with an 8.40.
The Warriors closed the night on the floor and grabbed the top five spots in the event with 2015 sectional champion Atwood leading the way with a 9.40. Atwood would also place first in the all-around with an impressive 35.10. An 8.53 earned Minnix a second place for her floor routine. Parzygnot took third with an 8.50. Frecker was fourth with a 7.98 and beer placed fifth with a 7.70.
Rounding out the all-around scores were Parzygnot in second (32.70), Angola’s Karlie Hutchins in third (30.18) and Minnix in fourth (29.83).
Wawasee (1-0) will get a true feel for where it is Thursday when it hosts Carroll. The Chargers are currently ranked No. 13 in state, Wawasee is No. 19.
